We are the professional body for people who work in chemistry. We are called the Royal Society (of Chemistry) because we have a Royal Charter which states our aims and objectives and shows how we are governed.
There’s more information about the Royal Society of Chemistry here:
      http://www.rsc.org/about-us/
Many other areas of science have a professional body too, such as the Instutue of Physics and The Society of Biology.
