I wasn’t put off a job in biology as such. I worked in marine botechnology for my PhD and for 3 years afterwards but when one job came to an end I had a look around for another job, which ended up being working for a software company. This was a temporary job to keep money coming in but I ended up staying with the company for 5 years becuase I really enjoyed it. This gave me new skills and experience which I could use in my next job, which was with the RSC. Quite often when you change jobs it’s because you have to for reasons outside of your control. That’s why it’s always worth being open minded about your career and take time to think about what you might want to do and how to get there. That way you’re much more prepared when an opportunity arises. And it’s good to try new things sometimes, it can take you in a direction you’d never thought of.
