A lot – according to NASA a space shuttle needs over 500,000 gallons of fuel. To put that in perspective, the average car uses about 400 gallons a year, so rockets need over 1250 x more fuel!
This is a great web site if you want to know more about the space shuttle – it is interesting that most of the fuel is used at launch and very little is needed after that.
