I only worked with DNA during my degree studies, learning about how it worked and how to map it. My PhD involved looking at how to get microorgnaisms to grow quicker and produce more omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids as a sustainable replacement for fish oil. We did this by experimenting with the growth media (food we give them) and the physical conditions they grow in. Because the organisms were quite complex they grew pretty slowly, so the next step of this project was to try to isolate the genes which produce the fatty acids and see if they can be inserted into bacteria to grow much more quickly. That was reseached by the PhD student who came after me.
